Technical Editor and Writer Consultant

POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS seeks two Technical Editor and Writer Consultants to support the elaboration, research, writing, correcting, and editing of reports and related materials in the framework of the Regional Group on Risks, Emergencies, and Disasters (“REDLAC” hereinafter) Protection Working Group, which is co-led by HIAS and UNHCR, to ensure that the products are readable, accurate, concise, well structured, and timely ready for publication.

HIAS´ comprehensive regional response for Latin America and the Caribbean meets the urgent needs of refugees, asylum seekers, and other forcibly displaced people in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Aruba, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

HIAS´ regional strategy relies on our high-impact services and well-established partnerships with donors and partners, including governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and local and refugee communities. It capitalizes on our expertise in providing operational support and programming in four areas, including Legal Protection; Gender-based Violence Prevention and Response; Community-based Mental Health and Psychosocial support; and Economic Inclusion.

REDLAC is a regional coordination platform for preparedness and response to humanitarian crises. Based on the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), it was created in 2003 as a mechanism to foster understanding and joint analysis of humanitarian crises and encourage regional, global, and national approaches. HIAS is an active member of REDLAC since 2018 and has been elected to co-lead the Protection Working Group along with UNHCHR.

OBJECTIVES & DELIVERABLES:

  • Two reports regarding the 2023 Work Plan of REDLAC Protection Working Group and related materials, including snapshots and executive summaries.
  • Analyze and monitor protection indicators in Central American countries and beyond in order to update the situation of refugees and migrants, and other persons in need in the sub-region following the co-leads guidance.
  • Review, adjust and edit the comments provided by the co-leads and member organizations of REDLAC’s Protection Working Group to the two reports in order to guarantee that their inputs and perspectives are reflected.
  • Conducting bilateral check-ins with members of the national REDLAC’s Protection Working Group to enable trust relationships and include their inputs and perspective in the reports and other activities.
  • Support the elaboration of key messages in the advocacy and communications products of REDLAC’s Protection Working Group.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate degree in journalism, law, political science, sociology, international relations, or related fields.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, editing, and speaking skills in Spanish and English.
  • At least five years of professional experience in conducting technical research reports, policy documents, and communication materials, including text editing and correction, related to human rights, refugees, migrants, or internally displaced people.
  • Solid experience as a technical writer, technical editor, or copyeditor in Spanish is essential.
  • Work experience with the UN, multi-lateral organisms, non-governmental organizations, and/or with States, preferably in the LAC region, is an advantage.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Strong text, table, figure, and map editing skills.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well independently.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook essential).
